An engagement ring is given during a marriage proposal and most often features a center stone, while wedding rings are the rings exchanged by the couple during the wedding ceremony. A 14-karat gold alloy (585 fineness) contains 58.5% pure gold, while 18-karat gold (750 fineness) contains 75% pure gold. The higher gold content gives an 18k gold ring a richer color, but the alloy is also softer and therefore more susceptible to scratches. 14k gold is harder and more practical for everyday wear, and it is also less expensive.

The simplest way is to secretly borrow a ring that the person wears on their ring finger and measure its inside diameter or show it to a jeweler.
